When Hurricane Ivan devastated Grand Cayman in 2004, there
were fifty bat houses mounted on utility poles. All of these
survived storm winds of over 200 mph for over 36 hours, much
of it in the eye-wall, and only lost a little paint. All
the bats inside them were alive and well. Even the roof shingles
stayed on - (we had both glued and nailed them very tightly
and used all stainless rust-proof screws and nails in construction).
We are grateful to Caribbean Utilities Co Ltd for the
donation of the strong, well-installed poles that withstood
the storm and to Ron Moser of The Machine Shop for his excellent
design and carpentry skills. These donations are key to the
success or our work. bat houses and as of April, 2011 there are 116 bat houses. 82 are confirmed to have colonies of bats living inside them so far this year. Many thanks to Wil Steward of CGMJ and Kelly Hill of ShedWerx for re-drawing the updated 2011 Bat House Building Plans. |
