Cuban Freshwater Crocodile – Crocodylus
rhombifer- Extirpated in the Cayman Islands – (Grand
Cayman)
No fossil remains found so far on Cayman Brac or Little
Cayman. It seems that this crocodile was once common on
Grand Cayman. Bones have been found at the Botanic Park
and on farmland in Lower Valley. There is speculation that
these were the “caimans” for which the islands
were named. The species is still found in the remote wetlands
in Cuba.
